Keywords. Anyone who has a website has heard that keywords are important to their online presence. We all know that they should be used on our site and in our profiles, but do we actually know why they’re important and the best ways to
use them on our WordPress sites?
Why keywords are important
A keyword is either a word or phrase that is typed into a search engine to find matches. In other words, it’s the things your potential customers are putting into Google to find you and your site.
Therefore, keywords are really important to your business success! That’s why you need to be using them on all of your online profiles, platforms and general copy – and your WordPress site is no exception.
Don’t overuse them
The problem with knowing how important keywords are – we often end up trying to use all of them in one hit! We stuff them all into every piece of online copy and wonder why we end up with copy that doesn’t sound natural and doesn’t read well.
The secret is to use them in moderation. For example, use your main keyword in your business name and on your website – that way, you know it’ll be used naturally when you’re speaking about your business.
It’s the same when you use them on your WordPress website – you can use them as tags, categories and in your page and post titles. However, when using them in your blog posts, look to use one keyword per post. That way you’ll ensure you’re writing content relating directly to that keyword and the content will sound natural too.
Where to use keywords
As mentioned already, there are several places you can use keywords. Here’s a brief summary:
- Page titles
- Website copy
- Blog post titles
- Categories
- Tags
- On images, as the ‘alt text’ and ‘title’
- Meta description on your SEO plugin
- Within your blog posts
- Profiles on social media
- Titles on your video and audio files
- Hashtags on social media
So why not check out your WordPress website and see where you can either tighten up or start using keywords in your content.
